In February of 2007, 83.24 percent of users visiting TechCrunch did so from a Windows machine. One year later, in February 2008, the stranglehold remained firm at 80.44 percent. In February 2009, the number was at 74.04 percent. Last year, it was 61.59 percent. And this year? The number of people visiting our site from Windows machines dipped to 53.84 percent.

The writing is on the wall.

Look at those numbers again for a second. In four years, Windows share among TechCrunch readers has fallen 30 percentage points. That’s incredible.

The knee-jerk reaction in the comment section will likely be something like “it’s because you guys cover Apple so much”. But the fact of the matter is that Macintosh share, after rising for three of those four years, fell last year as well. It’s the mobile devices — specifically the iPhone, iPad, and Android devices — that are eating away at Windows.

In fact, if the trend over the past four years continues at about the same pace, in two years, devices made by Apple (Macs, iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads) will surpass devices that run Windows as the top visitors to TechCrunch. And depending on how popular the iPad 2, iPhone 5, and OS X Lion are, it could easily happen next year.

Here are the broken down numbers:

Feb 2007

  • Windows: 83.24%

  • Mac: 13.59%

  • Linux: 2.51%

Feb 2008

  • Windows: 80.44%

  • Mac: 15.15%

  • Linux: 2.97%

  • iPhone: 0.77%

  • iPod: 0.15%

Feb 2009

  • Windows: 74.04%

  • Mac: 20.48%

  • Linux: 3.01%

  • iPhone: 1.60%

  • iPod: 0.28%

  • Android: 0.09%

Feb 2010

  • Windows: 61.59%

  • Mac: 28.62%

  • iPhone: 4.07%

  • Linux: 3.49%

  • Android: 0.87%

  • iPod: 0.53%

Feb 2011

  • Windows: 53.84%

  • Mac: 27.64%

  • iPhone: 6.72%

  • iPad: 3.44%

  • Linux: 3.28%

  • Android: 3.06%

  • iPod: 0.62%

While even the last batch of stats shows that Windows still has a nice cushion over number two, Mac, if you add the Apple products put together, it’s a different story.

  • Feb 2007: 13.59% Apple products

  • Feb 2008: 16.07% Apple products

  • Feb 2009: 22.36% Apple products

  • Feb 2010: 33.22% Apple products

  • Feb 2011: 38.42% Apple products

In the four year span, Apple has added 25 percentage points to their share among TechCrunch readers. That nearly all of the 30 percentage points that Windows lost in that same span (Android’s growth pretty much fills in the rest).

So it currently stands at Microsoft’s 53.84 percent versus Apple’s 38.42 percent. Again, a big year for iPad, iPhone, and Mac could mean a changing of the guard as soon as next year. But unless something drastic changes, you can be sure that Apple will be dominant among TechCrunch readers in two years.

The latest rumors have Windows 8 showing up sometime in mid/late 2012. But the fact of the matter is that Windows 7, much more widely praised than the disaster that was Vista, hasn’t helped Microsoft buck this trend among our readers. Perhaps they’re only hope of gaining back share at this point is Windows Phone. So far, that hasn’t been going too well. Nokia should help that, but will it be enough to offset the Windows losses?

Humorously, Microsoft’s best hope for not falling to Apple may well be Android. If Google’s platform continues to make gains, it could prolong Apple passing Microsoft.

But again, Apple has iPhone 5, iPad 2, and OS X Lion on the immediate horizon — all within the next few months. And then there’s the very real possibility of another iPad in the fall.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 5 are likely to push the Apple share forward immediately. But don’t sleep on OS X Lion either. The early indications are that Apple has indeed made it much more iOS-like. That means millions of iPad/iPhone/iPod touch owners who have traditionally been PC users, are going to feel a lot more comfortable on a Mac than ever before.

And a new PC-to-Mac data migration system built in to Lion will only help that.

OS X Lion is going to feed off of iOS users, and vice versa. And the Mac ecosystem is going to continue to expand. Just as happened in the browser world with Chrome taking over, a transition is happening among TechCrunch readers in the ecosystem space. The numbers don’t lie. And Microsoft better pray that our readers aren’t leading indicators of overall trends in the space — which is exactly what you have been in the past.

Editor’s Note: Jim Dalrymple has been writing about Apple for more than 15 years. You can follow him on Twitter @jdalrymple and on his Web site at The Loop.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

Companies Making Money

Over the next year or two, social commerce will disrupt e-commerce and social media, effectively turning our social interactions into commercial transactions. So how will this happen and where is the disruption taking place?

A Check-In Economy

You’re walking down the street staring at your phone and it’s telling you what deals are nearby. Perhaps not the best of visions but it’s the ecosystem that currently exists around check-in services like Foursquare and Facebook Places. The features are great, but staring at your phone could result into you running into something or even something running into you. It’s not elegant. The result has been an experience based on check-ins that take place when the consumer arrives at a venue.

Foursquare and Facebook both provide platforms that enable businesses to present deals or offers to visitors, in addition to rewarding visitors for repeat business. It’s an interesting business model and so far it appears to be having decent success. However, as deals disappear and users get tired of checking in, one has to wonder if this is truly the holy grail of social media marketing. If you want to know my opinion: it’s not. Check-ins are an early phase (reviews on Yelp were probably first) in a long shift which will completely disrupt commerce as we know it.

Will normal commerce continue to exist once social commerce takes hold? Definitely! However, a large portion of commerce will become much more integrated with our existing communication.

The Main Players

The goal for any business is to get more customers and more transactions (check-outs) and any new form of commerce will have to accomplish two things: It will need to empower the consumer and help transactions become frictionless. So if we examine all existing solutions through this lens, we should be able to determine how disruptive they truly are. Let’s take a look at a few.

Yelp

Yelp is one of the earliest innovators in the social commerce space. The site has empowered consumers through the amplification of their voices. Suddenly any consumer could instantly have a large (and targeted) audience of potential customers for the business they’re reviewing. Getting bad service? Try threatening the hostess or waiter with a bad Yelp review and see what they do. On a scale of one to ten, Yelp deserves a rating of ten when it comes to empowering the consumer.

As for transaction friction, Yelp has simply integrated with Open Table in order to make reservations easier. That’s about all the site has right now as far as I know, so I’d have to rate them a three on the empowerment scale.

Groupon & LivingSocial

The other major disruptors to online commerce lately have been Groupon and LivingSocial. So far though there’s very little that’s social about these services aside from them making it possible for users to share deals with others. That capability alone has helped grow these two companies to their current values in the billions. The two companies have empowered consumers through the power of numbers.

Consumers get a discounted price for a product or service, and the business gets a massive flood of new customers. While this strategy is rapidly becoming blemished with consumer and business complaints, it has proven to be extremely profitable. Shoppers also love getting a deal so it’s a win-win most of the time. As such, we’d rank these companies relatively high, like a seven, on the empowerment scale, due to the value provided.

However, the transaction isn’t exactly frictionless. After you make a purchase, you often need to go through a scheduling process, depending on the business. Given that the Groupon and LivingSocial effect can be as overwhelming as the Oprah effect, many businesses find it hard to respond to all the demand. While this model will become more integrated overtime, there hasn’t been a removal of friction for the most part, so we’ll score both companies a one on the frictionless scale.

Facebook Places And Foursquare

Facebook and Foursquare are both interesting in their approach to location and empowering the consumer. With Facebook, users could already complain to their friends. Foursquare, however, required the re-creation of a user’s social graph in order to accomplish the same thing. Ultimately, the business value of Facebook Places and Foursquare are a bit more abstract, giving businesses the ability to reward consumers for various behaviors within a given venue.

The existing rewards programs are reminiscent of traditional coupons, making them valuable for a segment of the population. While I’ve heard people extoll the values of creating a Place on Facebook or managing a venue on Foursquare, the return on investment has yet to prove itself.

For Facebook, the value presented by tracking user check-ins is improved advertising, and Deals appears to be more of an afterthought for the company, although that could change in the future. For Foursquare, the value surrounds rewarding consumers for frequenting a business.

Ultimately, I don’t find either of these products to be extremely empowering for the shopper.  The main reason is that once the consumer checks in, they aren’t as likely to change their decision to shop there. Contrast that with Yelp, where a bad review can result in a lost customer. As such, I’m ranking Facebook Places and Foursquare a three on the empowerment scale and a one on the frictionless transaction scale.

While I think both products will evolve over time, this space is still extremely nascent.

The Future

The convergence of local, mobile, and social (or “SoLoMo” as John Doerr calls it) is about to generate a tidal wave of change and we stand on the cusp of it. While I could wax poetic about the future of this space, I’ll simply say that the overall shopping experience will become much more social for a large percentage of transactions. If you think about all the purchases that involve social experiences (movies, concerts, travel, etc), these spaces are only beginning to get disrupted.

While the experiences are social, right now the transactions are not. So far the only social shopping experiences which exist today either provide basic integration with Facebook, sidebar chat with friends during the shopping experience, or other basic features. Over the next one to two years, we will see a wave of innovation in the social commerce space and it won’t be like the forms of interactions we have on the web; they will be completely different. While it’s easy to call the Groupons of the world overvalued, this is a trillion dollar market that is just beginning to unfold.

The biggest names in the tech industry seem to have collectively decided it's time to make the billions. Sure Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter have sold some ads and Foursquare brokered some promotional deals. But with the second wave of IPOs on the horizon and investors' eyeballs getting as round as the tech bubble, the time is nigh for tech demigods to show that they can make money off all those users they've spent years accumulating. And hopefully not alienate them in the process. Today, Mark Zuckerberg inched closer to that dream of a trillion dollars by offering streaming movies — and tanking Netflix's stock. Meanwhile, YouTube closed a deal on a production company presumably to make its very own content. Intel cast a wide net to examine tech companies' latest money-making ventures. Then we looked into our CrystalBall app to see what they might try next.

Facebook

Moneymaker: Warner Bros. just became the first Hollywood studio to stream movies directly on the social network. Facebook has been making a big move toward e-commerce lately, and the fact that you have to use Facebook Credits to buy movies and TV shows could be the tipping point to get users to hand their credit card info over to Mark Zuckerberg. Plus, studios looking for a way to stop Netflix's growth might not make Facebook suffer the same 28-day waiting period for new content.

Downside: At 30 credits (or $3) for a 48-hour rental for The Dark Knight, it will cost you. Plus, you have to "like" the movie or the director to get the privilege. Do you really want hundreds of your Facebook friends to see you "liked" and watched Valentine's Day on Valentine's Day?

What's next: Why should you use a credit card to buy Facebook Credits when you can use Zuckerbills (coming to a U.S. Treasury in 2020)?

Twitter

Moneymaker: In order to make money off its free iPhone app, this weekend Twitter introduced a number of new features, including Quickbar, a "forced trending topics bar" that includes promoted tweets — negating the idea of a service that quickly shows you what's actually trending.

Downside: Pundit John Gruber quickly dubbed the feature "Dickbar" after Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, but Gruber issued the unfortunate nickname on Twitter and it was widely retweeted. Advantage Costolo.

What's next: Can we pay someone to monitor our Twitter feed for us? It's getting overwhelming. Either that or design personalized lists of the best people to follow based on what's important to us, like updates on Libya and breaking bear-cub news.

Foursquare

Moneymaker: At SXSW this week, Foursquare is set to announce a partnership with American Express that will link users' credit cards with their Foursquare accounts. The incentive to consumers? Deals like "spend $5, save $5" at participating merchants. Although Foursquare said its motivation is to increase membership and loyalty and that it won't charge Amex for the privilege, it's hard to believe that will stay the case if it catches on.

Downside: We don't have an Amex card. And (confession) although we use the app for recommendations, we've never actually checked in anywhere. Sorry, Dennis and Naveen! But if they add other credit cards, we would.

What's next: How about a service that warns you beforehand if you're about to friend one of those compulsive people who check in with handfuls of people at name-dropping locales?

YouTube

Moneymaker: YouTube just closed a deal to buy Internet video company Next New Networks, the producers behind Auto-Tune the News, for less than $50 million. Although rumor had it that Google was trying to get into the video-production business, Business Insider reports that the move is actually designed to help existing YouTube partners make "more and better content." Which then leads to more users and, subsequently, more expensive ads.

Downside: Isn't YouTube's strength either grainy weird viral videos or pirated television, movie, and music content? The second could definitely use better quality, but does it even matter for the former?

What's next: How about veering into Hulu territory?

Skype

Moneymaker: Just regular old advertising on the Windows version of its paid video communications service.

Downside: Although Skype says it won't show ads during the video conferencing yet, this could devolve into a Minority Report-style advertising assault.

What's next: Would it be possible to embed microphone/receiver in our brain so we don't have to use the special headset? Just curious.

Update: TechCrunch makes an important clarification. Facebook hasn't announced its own streaming movie service. Rather the movie offering comes from Warner Brothers app that uses Facebook Credits' payment system. But if it proves successful and other studios follow suit, Zuckberg can still count on more personal credit card info coming his way. Someone better go tell Netflix's shareholders.

Job interview as well as Discussion

The job interview by JulieTurkewitz

The majority of roofing contractors provide totally free consultation services. This is particularly important, because it gives them an opportunity to evaluate what your roof requirements, also it provides you with a chance to evaluate them. As with all of companies, trust your instincts about the people you let upward on your roof. No issue how great the contractor's reputation or even suggestion, he or she should start by showing you with a business card. If the service provider arrives searching as well as talking within an unprofessional manner, chances are that the task he's going to perform will also be less than professional. This isn't to say that you ought to expect contractors to arrive within fits. They is going to be climbing in your roofing, so most will be dressed up in jeans and work boots or even sneakers. If the actual contractor appears to be interested in speaking upon his mobile phone while on your homes roof than he is in evaluating your own roof's needs, which may be an additional sign that he is not the main one to do the job. For your legal protection, be certain that the actual contractor offers adequate liability insurance coverage.

Roof Evaluation

Anticipate the service provider will be going up in your roof. In fact, any service provider who does not want to increase in your roof to judge the problem ought to be immediately reduced. Those who're serious about their function will either make a sketching of the roof's surface and mark trouble spots on it as they undergo their assessment, or they will consider photos or video of the surface while they are available online for. This is an extremely important action, because it allows you to observe exactly what the problems are as well as understand how they'll be set.

Estimation

Man jumps from his roof by pjarrettphoto

The next phase will be the written estimation. The service provider will require out their calculator and are available track of a written estimation. Some contractors will go to their vehicle or even van and write down the actual proposal, while others may crisis the numbers for the job prior to you. Once you're given the suggestion, ensure that you comprehend exactly which items is going to be used, how long the job will require and if there are any extra or even concealed costs that may occur during the repair of the roofing. The service provider should be able to solution many of these concerns effortlessly as well as forewarn you of any extra costs that might be incurred should the roof's integrity end up being damaged within.

Once you have obtained a few created estimates from roofing contractors, assess what every company or even service provider is willing to offer you for that cost. Do not necessarily low cost the highest bet, because sometimes the greatest bet will actually be the contractor who the task correctly. Also, be wary of prices for bids which are significantly less than other people. They may be using inferior items or perhaps be unethical about the possibility of concealed expenses. Above all, trust your intuition and go with the service provider who makes you feel most comfy about handing more than your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

AFP

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Wikileaks and the Uyghur People

through holly on Dec 20, This year
Henryk Szadziewski, Manager, Uyghur Human Rights Project

Whether it were actually in doubt, info acquired by the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese language federal government worries more than it's continued charge of the location this calls Xinjiang, which is also known as East Turkestan. The leaked wires through U.S. diplomats demonstrate the degree that Chinese language authorities attempt to persuade governments worldwide to adopt it's stance on issues affecting Uyghurs. The cables also display the actual U . s . States' concerns as well as sights concerning the on going repressive measures in the area.

uyghur by sarvaz

The majority of lighting associated with Chinese language federal government pressure are the cables directed in order to Chinese anger, or even the specter of Chinese language ire, within the release of Uyghur detainees in Guantánamo to 3rd nations. The Dec 29, 2008 cable television relates exactly how Chinese language Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi fulfilled using the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to China in order to voice Beijing's powerful opposition of launch in order to any kind of nation apart from China, and that if the Ough.Utes. did certainly accede to this request it would "avoid harm to bilateral relationships and also to cooperation ‘in essential areas'". Furthermore, the February 2009 cable television explains how the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible discharge of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfriendly act towards us" and a "slap within the face". The Ough.S. federal government stood company within not liberating the actual detainees to China illustrates the degree of the politicized nature from the Chinese judicial program. Genuine concerns over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the U.S. government's view the detainees would probably encounter torture as well as delivery if they came back to The far east

Chinese government pressure in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees wasn't only applied to the actual U.S. federal government, but also in order to Brand new Zealand and a number of Western governments which were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, in addition to Eu member states all appear to have borne the impact of Chinese language government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, which was at first prepared to think about 2 Uyghurs upon purely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less better than other detainees because of the negative effects taking Uyghurs might have on relationships along with China. A Might Eight, '09 cable television applies exactly how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported that Indonesia experienced knowledgeable The far east of the Ough.Utes. request to simply accept a few Uighur detainees held at Guantánamo and had been subsequently warned by China associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' if Germany were to simply accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables also discuss the unrest within Urumchi, the actual regional capital, in This summer '09. The July Thirteen, '09 cable television talking about bulk incidents within China states:

"Ethnic riots such as those in Xinjiang July 5-7 as well as in Tibet within March of 2008 differ markedly in origin as well as character through bulk incidents, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both existing serious problems for the actual Celebration, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Party leadership would not wait to open fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans when they considered it necessary to restore purchase. Bulk occurrences present another type of risk, he said, as the leadership is actually ‘afraid' to fireplace upon Han rioters with regard to fear of sparking massive public outrage that would turn from the Celebration."

This can be a relaxing viewpoint, particularly when 1 considers evidence presented in two reports launched this season through the Uyghur Individual Rights Project (UHRP) and Amnesty International that detail eyewitness accounts from the utilization of lethal reside fire towards Uyghur protestors within This summer 2009. In addition, the observation which fire wouldn't be deployed against Han Chinese protestors offers resonances for the various strategy used through Chinese language security forces within Urumchi in order to Han Chinese protests within September '09. During those direct orders, after that Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed demonstrators, that had required that he let them know regarding federal government reactions in order to protection issues. An identical ask for to meet with the Party Assistant by Uyghur demonstrators within July wasn't fulfilled.

The wider consequences from the unrest also noticed a short discussion about the effect it might have upon Iran-China relationships, as well as on relationships with Australia after Globe Uyghur Congress President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke in the National Push Membership within Canberra within August 2009. Within the latter situation, the Chinese federal government "privately warn[ed] a significant Australian bank which vendors the National Push Club to make use of it's impact to block a Kadeer talk there".

The actual United States' concerns concerning the situation within the Uyghur area are available via within the wires. In a dialogue on policy path in Tibet, Ough.S. officials explain that it will be impossible with regard to Chinese language leaders to adopt a much softer collection "if they look like they are doing so under international pressure". The actual cable television out dated 04 16, 2008, one month following the episode of unrest within Tibetan areas, additionally relayed the actual observation "that domestic stability remains the leadership's top priority most of all, meaning there will ‘almost surely' end up being absolutely no relaxation of the present difficult line upon Tibet or in places such as Xinjiang." The information included in the cable also storage sheds gentle about the extreme level of sensitivity that the Chinese government views territorial ethics, and the feasible drip over of unrest through Tibet.

The prospect of methods to stress in Tibet as well as Xinjiang as a result of civil culture tend to be debated in a Feb Twenty-four, 08 cable television. Whilst recommending which China's economic success will increase it's resistance to democratic change, the cable television additionally talks about how Chinese frontrunners see the usefulness associated with "a restricted growth associated with civil society, such as improvements in the guideline associated with regulation along with a more powerful role for authorized religions, NGOs, non profit organizations along with other actors in areas which bring about social stability and do not challenge Communist Party rule." This can be a significant alternation in considering, that has observed Ough.Utes. authorities market the idea which Chinese language financial development, and financial relations with The far east brings about a progressively democratic society; nevertheless, more belief appears to be put into a grassroots movement than one which starts in the best levels of the Chinese language federal government. Nevertheless, the cable proves which "[i]n places for example Tibet and Xinjiang, the fear of separatism leads to tighter limitations about the growth of municipal culture." This method is viewed as counter-productive by the recognized, who suggests that the actual Ough.Utes. federal government "should still express...serious concerns more than Beijing's human rights report and appeal to China's growing awareness which higher regard for individual rights, spiritual freedom and also the rule associated with law assists to advertise the development as well as social stability which China looks for in addition to to improve China's worldwide picture." This type of strategy would consider substantial diplomatic abilities considering "China's weird fear that the United States secretly promotes routine change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The actual wires provide understanding of the daily business of diplomacy that's rarely owned by everyone, and it is fascinating to note the quantity of function done nowadays on Uyghur issues. The significance of the actual role of the us as a keep track of associated with Uyghur human rights conditions in personal discussions is created obvious, as well as contrasts with its tactful public position. The staff from the Uyghur Individual Rights Project is well aware of pressure china government exerts on Uyghur activists; nevertheless, the facts of Chinese language government pressure upon it's alternatives is illustrative of the degree that Chinese authorities attempt to control contradictory stories. With more facts to come from Wikileaks, concerns over Uyghurs might not get the headlines, however the wires have shed new gentle about the documentation of human privileges problems within the Uyghur region.

Portraits of Uyghur People

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the north-western part of China, the province of Xinjiang is a very least populated land while it covers close to a sixth with the nation's territory. Having resisted while in generations the Han Chinese control, Xinjiang, or Old East Turkestan, fell into under the Chinese Han domination in 1949. From then, its population is mainly Uyghur People and Turkic - speaking System.

Uyghur Man by Jeremy Snell

Muslim above all, the Uyghur people have a deep religious identification which, in particular, allowed them to preserve a solid difference in opposition to the Chinese enemy. In fact, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a excellent civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

While in their history, the Uyghur People successively adopted Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before lastly converting to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., as a result starting the way to the Islamization of the whole Central Asia.

Under the influence of the religions which they taken on, Uyghur People used successively, and sometimes in a competing way, a large number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

Door frame by ink.spill

The coming of Islam was a great modification because it was supported by the assimilation of the Uyghur land in the immense Turkic and Islamic Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used presently.

If their own writing, their own language and their religion mark a real difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also are different from their characteristic, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features directing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only eight million inhabitants - a little for this kind of big land. Thus, the Uyghurs are now part of the fifty six racial minority groups having been recognized in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular statute will allow them a few privileges in a land exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is known as the second official language in Xinjiang.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, seems really illusory. The presence of all natural resources in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and its proximity with locations known as very sensitive, strongly urged the government to speed up the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility job opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more freedom, but in particular the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identity and their tradition , even though they become a minority on their own land.

Making Money Cash

I know that memories are short on Wall Street. But are they short on Main Street too? Reading Linda Stern’s latest paean to leverage and housing risk, it certainly seems that way. Saving for a down payment is hard, she says. It can take time!

And that doesn’t seem to pay. If you think about the cost of paying rent for five or more years, you may be better off jumping into a home with a low down payment now. That’s true even if you have to spend more money on fees and mortgage insurance to get one of those low down payment loans.

Well, yes, let’s think about the cost of paying rent for five or more years. In fact, let’s plug all our numbers into a rent-vs-buy calculator and see where we’re at after five years. The problem with Linda’s formulation here is that it helps to reinforce the common fallacy that 100% of rent payments are “wasted,” in a way that mortgage payments are not. But that’s simply not true. In both cases you’re paying money every month for your shelter; in the rental case that money goes to the landlord, while in the ownership case it goes to the bank.

Some small part of your monthly payment may or may not end up helping you build equity in your home, if house prices move up rather than down and depending on how much of your payment goes towards principal. But remember that the alternative here is saving up for a down payment — which is essentially the same thing as building up equity in a future home. If you save up $250 per month for five years and then put down $15,000 as a down payment, then you immediately start off with $15,000 of equity in your home. By contrast, if you buy today with no money down and start making mortgage payments, there’s a good chance your equity will be much less than $15,000 in five years’ time.

But Linda’s on a roll here, and manages to come out with one of the most astonishing pieces of personal-finance advice I’ve seen since the crisis hit:

Even if you have the money for a bigger down payment, there can be good reasons to save your cash. Mortgage rates continue to skirt all-time lows: Why not put your money to work for yourself and borrow as much as you can reasonably afford, on a monthly basis, at today’s rates? You can put the money you’re not paying into a down payment to work elsewhere. If home values rise, you will have done your best to leverage a small down payment into bigger equity. If they fall, you’ll have less skin in the game, and that could put more pressure on your banker to improve your loan terms lest you walk away.

This, in a nutshell, is everything that was wrong with the housing market before the crash — everything that we want to avoid going forward. Can’t Linda look around at the current devastated state of many people who bought with little or no money down, and see the dangers here? Evidently not. Instead, she seems to think it’s a bright idea to borrow more money than you need, to the point at which you’re pushing the envelope of what you can reasonably afford. And then take the cash you’re not using for a down payment, and “put your money to work for yourself.”

I barely know where to start on this. Here’s one way of thinking about it: banks are not charities, and that they expect to make money from their loans. They have a cost of funds which is lower than the mortgage rate that you’re paying; the difference between the two rates is their profit. You, however, if you follow Linda’s advice, have a cost of funds which is your mortgage rate: if you wind up getting a lower return on your savings than you’re paying on your mortgage, you would have been better off just using the money for a down payment. Needless to say, if there was an easy way of getting a higher return on capital than the mortgage rate, the banks would have done it already, rather than lending you the money. And it’s pretty delusional, frankly, to think that you can invest better than say JP Morgan. Yes, there are tax benefits to having lots of mortgage-interest payments. But they’re not sufficient to make the difference here.

Here’s another way: let’s say you own your home outright. Would you take out a mortgage against 95% of your home’s present market value, and then invest that money in the market somehow, trying to “put it to work for yourself “? Of course not: you don’t have remotely that kind of risk appetite. Borrowing money against your house to invest in the market is, always, stupid. But that’s exactly what Linda’s proposing you do.

And here’s one more: shit happens. Sometimes, you end up needing money, in an emergency. If you’re already borrowing as much as you can reasonably afford, that’s a big problem. If you have a bit of fiscal breathing room, you’re much better off. If you end up in a situation where you’re in a position to put pressure on your banker to improve your loan terms lest you walk away, that’s not a good situation to be in. It means you’re broke. It’s something you want to avoid, whereas in Linda World it seems to be something to actively court.

Linda’s also convinced that house prices are going to rise: if you buy now rather than later, she writes, that means you’re buying “while housing prices are low.” That’s debatable — they still seem quite expensive, on some measures: the price-to-rent ratio, for instance, is still well above its historical average. And more generally, buying low doesn’t help you in the slightest if prices just continue to grind lower.

Linda’s conclusion is that “the less you put down, the better off you are.” Which is true so long as you keep on making all your mortgage payments without any problem, and nothing goes very wrong either with your personal economic situation or with the US economy as a whole. That’s the way that leverage works: it makes everything sunny, so long as things go right. And then it plunges you into misery when things go wrong.

The scariest part of Linda’s post, for me, is when she talks about how it’s a good idea to “do your best to leverage a small down payment into bigger equity.” It’s not the dollar amount of the equity she’s talking about here, it’s the leverage used to get there, and the higher the leverage the better off you are. Following that advice got us into our current mess. And taking it now is a recipe for disaster.

Making Money Online Easy

Last week, Novelr profiled Amanda Hocking, whom they dubbed the very rich indie writer. Hocking is a 26-year-old woman who writes “paranormal romance” novels and publishes them herself through Amazon’s Kindle store. She’s been very successful, and has made a lot of money.

Her success has led to all sorts of speculation — as success will do — and comments from folks who think they could do what she does, too. They think she’s an overnight success. She recently posted a response at her website, and I like it. Here’s an excerpt:

This is literally years of work you’re seeing. And hours and hours of work each day. The amount of time and energy I put into marketing is exhausting. I am continuously overwhelmed by the amount of work I have to do that isn’t writing a book. I hardly have time to write anymore, which sucks and terrifies me.

If you read Hocking’s post, you might understand some of my own mindset over the past few years. Imagine that instead of discussing supernatural love stories, she’s writing about an unexpectedly successful personal-finance blog. There are some close parallels. I don’t mean that in a negative, complain-y way. I just mean to stress that yes, you can make it big doing something you love, but it’ll probably take a lot of hard work. (And luck. There’s always a bit of luck involved.)

Speaking of making money: There’s been a small flurry of online info about making more money lately. (You know this is one of my pet topics, right?) For example, Inc. magazine posted an article from Jason Fried about how to get good at making money. Fried’s list is targeted at small-business owners. Trent at The Simple Dollar responded with his own list of five easy steps to make money for average folks. Both articles are interesting.

Moving on: I’ve written before about the value of a neighborhood exchange — an informal system of borrowing and lending goods and services. David at My Two Dollars has a great list of items to share with your neighbors to save money. I realize that not everyone likes to borrow or lend things, but if you live in an area with good social capital, this can be a great way for everyone involved to save space and cash.

Since returning from Africa, I’ve been struggling to get everything done that needs to be done. There just aren’t enough hours in the day. So I was interested in the latest post at Pop Economics, which asks, “How much do you value your time?” Pop says the balance between time and money is tough to find — we want more of both. He’s actually experimenting with a personal assistant, which I like. I’ve been waiting for an average joe to do this and report on how it goes. (As opposed to somebody like Tim Ferriss, who makes it sound like a way to become superhuman.)

Google has gotten a lot of attention for the launch of One Pass, the all-in-one subscription plan for publishers that the search giant revealed earlier today — primarily because it made for a nice counterpoint to Apple’s new in-app subscription system, which launched on Tuesday. While Apple’s offering is closed and takes a big chunk of the revenue from publishers, Google’s takes a much smaller cut — and because it’s based on the web and not on controlling access to a walled garden, Google’s system is much more open. That said, however, it’s not at all clear that publishers will get anywhere by signing up for it, open or not.

The main benefits of Google’s plan are fairly obvious: It doesn’t force publishers to provide the company with preferential access to their customers, the way Apple does by requiring in-app purchasing for all subscription services, and Google is taking only 10 percent of the revenue any publishers bring in via its payment system, while Apple takes 30 percent of all subscription fees. On top of that, as MG Siegler notes, the One Pass system provides publishers with access to information about those who sign up — names, email addresses, zip codes and so on — which is crucial data that content companies use to market their services to advertisers. Apple turns this option off by default, and users have to opt in.

That’s the good news. The bad news? Google’s One Pass is pretty much just a warmed-over content paywall. All it does is collect the money for publishers who want to put up a toll-booth around their content. In fact, the thing it resembles the most — as Josh Benton of the Nieman Journalism Lab notes — is the Journalism Online Press+ system that entrepreneur Steven Brill and former Wall Street Journal executive Gordon Crovitz have been peddling to newspapers and magazines for the past year or more, without much success.

Like that system, Google’s service is essentially designed to handle the payment processing for multiple subscription sites, so users can theoretically sign up for dozens without worrying about being nickel-and-dimed by each one. There’s just one problem: There’s no sign that users have any interest in doing this — or at least, not in large enough numbers to make it work for anyone other than perhaps The Economist and the Wall Street Journal. Those who have put up new paywalls, including The Times of London, have seen the vast majority of their readers disappear into the wind.

One of the reasons users of Apple products like the iPhone and the iPad seem a lot more willing to pay for things like apps is because the experience is so much better and paying is so easy. Despite that, magazine and newspaper publishers have have had little success so far in getting people to pay for their apps. Why would it be any easier with Google’s One Pass? If anything, it’s likely to be even harder, because it’s based on the open web — and users are likely to notice that free content is all around them, while iPhone and iPad apps do a fairly good job of disguising that fact.

So congratulations to Google for making some hay with its launch, but any publisher who sees One Pass as some kind of golden ticket is dreaming in Technicolor.
